Rachmaninow zmarł na czerniaka 28 marca 1943, w Beverly Hills w Kalifornii, cztery dni przed swoimi siedemdziesiątymi urodzinami. Chór zaśpiewał jego Całonocne czuwanie na pogrzebie. Rachmaninow chciał, by po śmierci pochowano go na terenie jego posiadłości w Szwajcarii, ale trwająca II wojna światowa uniemożliwiła spełnienie jego życzenia [22] .
